Arri Amira @ NAB 2014

The highly awaited Arri Amira was announced last year but is still drawing in the crowds at NAB!

Arri say: "Featuring the same sensor and exceptional image quality as the ARRI ALEXA, AMIRA records superior HD 1080 or 2K pictures that are suitable for any distribution format. With a dynamic range of more than 14 stops, low noise levels, subtle highlight handling, natural color rendering, breathtaking skin tones and speeds of up to 200 fps, AMIRA will deliver stunning, life-like images"

The Amira, featuring the same sensor as the popular Alexa, shoots up to 200FPS which beats the Alexa that only shot up to 120FPS. The Amira also has a comfortable shoulder mount and comes with a viewfinder so it's ready to pick-up and shoot. Arri have chosen to use the CFast 2.0 memory cards which record at over twice the speed as todays fastest cards (350Mb/s), which is a shame for all the people who have already invested in SxS technology. However technology moves on and fingers crossed other manufacturers will move in this direction too as the demand for 4k and higher shooting speeds increase. Unfortunately the Amira only shoots ProRes unlike the previous Alexa which would also shoot DNxHD, so all the Avid users will need to transcode the footage before it can be used. FCP users however will have ready to edit footage as soon as the shoot is over.

Aside from these differences the Amira will almost certainly do well. Following in the footsteps of the Alexa it will have a high demand as it produces the faultless images that we have known to expect from Arri. The Amira will have competition though with the Sony PMW-F55, which at around half the cost will shoot 4k and 180FPS (in PAL mode).

We are very excited by the first release of the Amira (Due Summer 2014) and have our name down on the waiting list. Watch this space!!!
